‘He will be a heartbreaker,’ Grandad said.

‘Would you like to hold him?’ Sarah asked.

He reached out, with an arm cradling his head. In awe of his full head of hair and blue eyes. A tiny hand gripped his finger. The resemblance to his son was strong.

‘I have called him Joe.’

His watery smile, and they were both unafraid to cry.

‘He would have been proud. Has Mike told his parents?’

‘They’re visiting later. Although, you do realise, the babysitting is going to be shared. Mum has already booked her slots. She came this morning, while you were at the homeless shelter.’

‘Did you behave?’

‘Course I did …’

‘There won’t be any arguments with this little boy. Joey Boy … You will be loved. You can be anything you dream to be. ’ He gently placed his grandson in his cot. ‘Just like your brilliant Mummy.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
