Green Thumb

How do you feel about gardening and yardwork? Do you differentiate between them, or are they basically the same in your book? Are they fun activities that are more hobby than chore, or are they tasks you’d pay good money not to do again if you could afford it?

It would be great to be successful at tending to flowers, however I was not born with a green thumb. My house plants never live long. Like my mum, I would over water a rubber plant. I chose my house because it was mostly decking, stones and fake grass.

This year, I replaced my decking with paving slabs. Rotting in places, the wood cracked by our Jack Russell, Molly, standing on it. The stones were taken out, and primarily weeds grow there. The artificial turf went mouldy, so we removed that too.

I would hire a gardener, but that isn’t possible.

Not afraid of hard work, and I would love a space where my granddaughter has the chance to play safely. Put a fence in the middle, add asphalt and a little wooden playhouse. The dogs would have their space too. A seating area, where we are able to enjoy the sunshire.

It is not really a hobby or a chore, simply something that needs to be done.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. Kind of like a clean house, I love a garden…. if the work is mostly done by others! I would love a garden with flowers and a path and a seating area. But I also love fresh veggies. Let’s face it, both require work. I start off great but it peters off before the end of the season… Especially when little beasties like ground hogs try to eat all my produce!

    1. I would love a raised bed, where I can grow vegetables with my granddaughter. I remember my dad growing tomatoes (going red in the airing cupboard) lettuce, potatoes, green beans (shelling them with my parents). They do require work, but I reckon it won’t stop you from achieving your dream garden.

      1. Last year my sister, and this year, my friend, bought these lovely raised beds that the ground hogs cannot reach. I think I will have to give in next year and buy them. I had kept pallets so that my son could help me build them but if I wait for him, I’ll never get them made! Fresh peas are soooo good, as are green beans. I’ve been making salads with my lettuce. So good.
