Rigid against my spine, the gun dug into my back.

Tony, lost for words, follows me to the sofa,where we are both shoved down.

‘Barbie girl, knew I could rely on you.’

‘As usual, it is up to me.’

‘What about Richard? He okay?’

She smirks. ‘Got a bit of a headache from this idiot, but he’ll recover. Left him to rot. Don’t worry, big brother, we require someone to take the fall.’

Richie, like she was his friend … It is my turn to comfort. His confidant, for two years, helping him survive his grief, is laughing in his face.

‘Did you really believe all that sap I told you? She wipes the barrel down his cheeks. ‘All that nonsense about being your fault. Did you grow up in a shitty children’s home? No … You had a comfortable bed, a boyfriend, who loved you.’

‘Were you there when Graham died?’ I ask.

‘Bless you, of course I was. Boy, did that car burn.’

I hold my tears because she doesn’t deserve my anger.

Tony holds me as we are guided against the flat cushions. I have no reason to question what they intend to do, as all our lives are in the balance. Only, the urge to fight, overwhelms my sense of foreboding.

You ghost hovers, a reminder that I need to keep on living.
