Safely

‘I would take the shirt off my back, but this needs to stop.’

David stared at his house mate, with a long suffering stare.

‘It’s just there has been a lot happening lately, and I don’t enjoy asking.’

‘Look, this is the last time, but I have an idea. We could sit down and dive into your finances, and what your outgoings are, and the amount you can safely spend. It is possible that it will support you in saving, so that if something happens, you have spare cash to deal with it.

Tears fell, and Louise wasn’t sure why. Guilt, fear, and the complication of having to ask. When she understood life spun so out of control, she couldn’t find a way out. She hated being reliant on someone who needed a shoulder to cry on too.

‘Sorry, didn’t mean to be so emotional, and thank you.’

‘I have a calculator, all you have to do is show me what you are paying out for.’

‘First, let me make you a cup of tea, and there are a few biscuits in the cupboard.’

‘Okay, what is this phone bill?’ Fifty pounds a month. Do you really need all that data?’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. My Dad introduced me to budgeting when I was a child, saying I could have anything I wanted as long as I worked/saved for it. It stuck and I worked on the rule of thirds all my working life: wages in, third for bills and housekeeping (or to my Mum when I lived at home), third to savings then what was left (always slightly less than an exact third) mine to do as I wished, and I usually saved some of that too.
In today’s world, a third of one’s income is usually not enough to cover hefty mortgages and bills so one has to prioritise. Good post Diana.
