It is spending time with my family, which bring me joy.
I have been on a summer holiday for years, and this is the time I cherish the most. We are not rushing from work to home. We plan and share our time together, like going to the zoo, or a farm, or walking around a witchy village.
Last year, on one of the hottest days, we spent a few hours on the beach. My daughter invited some of her friends. They went crabbing. We each bought snacks for the afternoon; sausage rolls, sandwiches, cake, crisps, and cold drinks.
I remember my granddaughter laughing when she ran into the waves; me panicking because it got deep. My husband taking a walk; being on the sand for too long and he gets bored. My daughter, with her friends, sharing some time out at sea. A bored grandson, sleeping most of the time.
At Christmas, there aren’t any parties, but eating well, playing board games, and being with my children, grandchildren, and husband add to our happy memories.
As a child, I sat with my dad. He helped me create sandcastles, and we carried water from to make a moat. Mum hated the sun, and preferred to play bingo instead.
There are many families who don’t share this bond, and I count myself lucky.
It is moments we spend as a family, give us the strength for the rest of the year.
I think this is lovely, Diana. My family was like this when we were growing up and my parents were younger. In there 80s now, they don’t go out very much.

I am, and I was taught well. I was lucky to have parents who taught me the value of family.

What you say rings so true, Diana. When I look at the brokenness of the world around me, I can’t help but be grateful for that unbroken bond of family.
