Love

Cleopatra swept her arms around her Chidinma. Listening to the warning cries suffocating her jungle. Humans slicing tall trees like they were nothing more than insignificant strands of wood. Screams rang across the leaves, each animal’s dwelling lost to greed.

Many years, too many, where they moved in the direction of the river.

‘Mama, where do we go now? I want to stay; this is my home.’

‘Far from here,’ she said, stroking the tufts on her daughter’s brow.

‘Why do they hurt the spirits?’

‘They don’t understand their loss as we do. How often do they clutch a branch, feeling the safety within their wings? Each animal allowing the space to thrive. From the tiny ant to the mighty lion. We are all part of our gentle earth. No creature more special than the rest.’

‘Will we survive?’

‘I hope so, but we should leave.’

She didn’t want to worry her sweet baby; many mothers were separated from their young.

Sweeping her child to her shoulders, she leaped in the direction of the outstretched arm of the Quiver Tree. Today, for protection, they should flee. With her diminishing family, she hoped this time would bring them a fearless life.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. It is so sad when you actually think of all the animals and creatures that are just dying because there are people that need more buildings and more concrete. Every city in the US probably has hundreds of thousands of empty buildings and abandoned homes. It seems so wasteful.
