Characters Places and a Dream

Written for https://weeklyprompts.com/2025/04/19/weekly-prompts-weekend-challenge-obsession/

The craft of writing is an obsession all authors share. We sit at a computer, or with a notepad, waiting for inspiration. It is difficult to stop. Especially when we have so much revolving around our minds.

Characters, places, and a dream to write a book.

Last week I went to a writer’s conference; how often do you see our people in one room? They all talked about diversifying; plays, poems, short story competitions, non-fiction and other genres. It’s kind of what we do here. What gave me hope was the published writers still having the same doubts about their craft as I do.

Imposter syndrome.

Why are we doing this? Our composition isn’t that good, just a pile of words on the screen. Nonsensical sentences scrawled across the paper like crazy paving. That is kind of what it should be.

Not perfect.

Today, once I have finished my blog, I am walking my dog. He keeps staring in my direction, hoping I will tear myself from the laptop. I might make a cake, finish my paint by numbers, or watch some television.

What are you going to do today?

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. It’s just after 3:00 p.m. here in the UK. So my day began a few hours ago. I had a shower first thing, followed by a cup of coffee and a half hour of blogging. I went for a drive in the Dales and called at three cafes (two of them were closed). I came home and helped my son hang his laundry on the garden washing line. I went to the supermarket, came home, and put my feet up with a cup of tea.

Enjoy your day, and thank you for joining in the challenge.
