Unafraid

The house wasn’t the same anymore.

Amanda stood at the gate, wondering whether she should walk over the threshold. Her therapist’s words hovered in her mind like a swarm of hornets stinging her positive thoughts. Carnations scattered throughout the dirt, unafraid of being seen. Pretty pink petals littered the once perfect path.

Regimented grass, once proud, rested against the daises.

A gentle nudge was all it took for it to open.

She crept over the paving stones, careful not to touch the cracks.

With her hands ready to knock, the door opened anyway.

Dressed in faded jeans, age lines no longer threatened to keep secrets. There was a strength in her mum’s smile.

Tears streamed down her empowered face.

‘Put the kettle on, been walking for ages, and I’m gasping for a cuppa.’

Her step dad’s secret shadow failed to haunt the living.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
