Deep Roots

Yesterday I joined a group of writers, artists, musicians, and freestyle dancers in a day of creativity. We worked with local director who runs Deep Roots Tall Trees. While I was there I found out about their dance group, which I will join. I met a woman called Abbi, who runs poetry sessions on line, and about a local group, a collective of poets, on Facebook.

We completed an exercise, where we held sticks, and worked with a partner to move around the floor. Joined other duos, and eventually moved as a group to show how interconnected we are.

Our next exercise was to write phrases for the prompt words ”connect, support and balance.” I wrote some poems. We were then asked to paste phrases around the room. I chose ”safety net”.

I spent some time writing an acrostic poem, watching the dancers, and listening to the live musicians.

Show support in the toughest weather

Assume inner peace, we thrive together

Friends, new and old, creativity free

Empathy, as we dance, we can see

Trust overpowers the threat of fear

Yesterday disappears, the future’s near

It brings

New beginnings, a rainbows end

Every shade of colours blend into one

True self.

We were also told there would be an audience to watch all our performances. There were about six people, but it is a start. I was nervous, because I prefer to be behind a pen or screen. However, because it was a group activity, I found some confidence in my spoken word.

I would definitely be part of this again.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
