Mask of Invisibility

Sarah wondered what choice she had in her first therapy session; her plan of remaining undetected by teachers. Eyes down, focussed on her work, she could wear her mask of invisibility.

‘Please, do this for me, I cannot lose you too,’ her dad said.

She chewed the inside of her gum and swallowed metallic bile – James, his Man United football top hidden by a black hoodie, urged her to accept.

‘How can I talk to a stranger?’

‘It is easier love; there are things I cannot say to family, but when I talk to Heather, I don’t have to be . . . me.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
