When I got diagnosed with high cholesterol, I decided I would start making cakes from scratch. I have an extremely sweet tooth, and didn’t want to cut out my favourite treat completely. Using flora, which was lower in fat.
I enjoyed baking, and it gave me something to do in the afternoon.
Lemon Drizzle, Victoria Sponge, cupcakes, and many biscuits. With increased confidence, I used a ‘children’s cookbook I received for Christmas. Before this, I used to use cake mix because, most of the time, they were like cardboard.
It helped that I was supporting students in food tech classes and learnt that it was easy to follow a recipe. As long as you followed the rules, they were as good as shop brought.
This also linked to cooking Spaghetti Bolognaise, and creating sauces using healthier ingredients. Jars contain increased salt and sugar. In fact, this is true for most processed food; beans, bread, and milk are some of them.
Even the healthy snacks have hidden nasties. If they are low in sugar, they are high in saturated fats. When you read the label, there will be mostly red, despite being marketed as healthier alternatives.
It is better to eat our designated five a day of vegetables and fruit.
