‘I fold,’ Aiden said, his hand looking more like a multicoloured rainbow.

His friends gripped their cards, each trying to mimic a well bred stare. The pot, a collection of copper and silver coins, the prize for the winner.

‘I raise,’ Steve said, and added ten pence.

Stan scowled, as he dropped his cards into the forgotten pile.

Locked in a dual, they pushed to fifty pence, and the last person showed his cards; nothing but a pair, Aiden knew he could have won if he had more money.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
