Wouldn’t Budge

Written for https://thesoundofonehandtyping.com/category/writers-workshop-2/ and the voice of a pet.

I’ve been home alone for hours, and she promised to return soon. How long is that? The carpet is going threadbare from all my pacing. I cannot sit still. I go into the kitchen to see what she left on the side. Last time, I found a packet of bacon. I took it to where she sleeps to eat, but that darn plastic wouldn’t budge. I pawed at it for ages, but nothing.

I know where there is chocolate – if I run, the portal opens. Ahh, the smelly stuff, that’s going to serve her right. Anyway, it wasn’t my fault – my bowl was empty, and she only left me water. The vet told her I was overweight, so I don’t obtain any treats. Although she allows me a carrot if I am a good boy.

Who’s that? I crash into the plastic, and bark. Get out of my house, you horrible man in red. We play tug of war with a thin white envelope before he runs down the path, his bag over his head.

The cat stretches out its paw and cleans its fur. She has never been bothered. If there is a warm blanket to relax on, she takes the win. Even when Mum returns, she’ll stick up her nose and sashay off.

Oh, that’s the door! She’s back! What’s that in her bag? Mum! Mum! Mum! I love you so much! I push the empty wrappers under the carpet.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
