Reading Rules

1.  Did anyone read you a bedtime story when you were a child?

I can’t remember being read to, or being taught to read. Although, I would imagine it were my dad, sister, or brother. Mum was dyslexic. Her shopping lists ”shugar, sauges, potoes”, proved that. I could read hardback books like ”Katie, and What Katie Did Next, by the time I was five. At the age of eight, I was given a pink petite typewriter and loved typing stories. My love of reading, and books has never stopped, although when we write, sometimes we forget the joy it brings.
2.  Did you read bedtime stories to anyone?

I read to both of my children, and it is the reason the Harry Potter series is so important to me. My daughter hated reading, as she is dyslexic. We bonded over the books, and she read them herself when she was older. She sorted herself into Hufflepuff, and for me, Ravenclaw.

3.  Do you prefer to read a book, an ebook/kindle, or audio book?

I prefer reading a book, where I can turn the pages. My favourite place to be immersed in a story is the bathroom. Especially when my children were younger.

4.  What is your favourite fairy tale?

I’m not sure I have a favourite, although I loved all of them. I commented on Ruth Blogs Here, about our fairy tale books. At the end of Cinderella, the ugly sisters had their eyes pecked out by crows. The Grim fairy tales always had a moral at the end.

I am grateful for being taught to read, and finding the joy those words brought me. The library has always been my safe space, when I can immerse myself in other characters, and hope for their happy ending.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. A lovely post …I have a dyslexic brother and our middle son too… But as you say with help they became avid readers too. Infact my brother who is eighty has read every single Harry Potter!
