Jacky looked in the mirror, not sure she was the same girl all those years ago who wanted to have purple highlights in her hair and a tattoo covering her pale skin. She remembered when she was seven, wanting a Barbie. But not the ballerina, but a vet, teacher, or doctor. She would line up her teddies and read to them as if they were children in a classroom.

She stared at her reflection.

With streaks of blue through her hair, some of it came true.

‘You’ve got this, Mummy,’ her daughter said, with an intuitive hug. ‘I love you.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
