‘Life is just a brief interlude,’ Nanna said.
‘What does that even mean?’ Sally nudged closer, and her hand slipped into an older version.
The sun streamed through the net curtains, peering through the holes like fireflies. Goodbyes mean something; that’s what her mum told her.
‘It means I will never leave you. If you look out of the window and see a rose bloom, that is me. We all return to the earth as energy. Energy is indestructible; it merely changes form.’
‘I learnt that in Science,’ Sally said.
‘See, then it’s true. Now you go out into that sunshine and explore.’
She kissed her nanna on her wrinkled forehead, and pushed the door closed. Mummy lied. This wasn’t goodbye, just see you later when the spring comes again.
