Outside his garden shed, his carrots, potatoes, and green beans thrived. Home was no longer his palace. Since his wife died, the rooms collapsed into one another. It was a place where he couldn’t sleep, or promised his children he was okay.
At least in his quiet space, he could sit in his folding chair and watch the bees buzzing around his roses. It was a pure place to rest his eyes and see her beautiful face smiling.
‘You okay, Bert?’
‘Yea, just picked my tomatoes, having a bit of a rest. Haven’t seen you in a while, everything okay?’
‘Me wife passed, been busy with stuff.’ He kicked some dirt from under his boots.
‘Sorry, mate, didn’t know.’
‘It were sudden like, I got a bit … well it was my daughter who said I should do some gardening. She misses my blackberries, says they are great in her apple pies. Only I reckon I need to plant some more. Didn’t know if you had any seeds.’
‘Yea, might have a few. Did you want any help?
