‘I learnt a word today, in religious education, Grannie. Numinous.’
‘Are sure that is a word, sweetheart?’
‘Yes, it is. My teacher said so.’ With her hands on both hips, Lily shared the same indignant look her daughter did when she ate the last packet of crisps.
‘Are you sure you don’t mean numerous?’
‘No, numinous, it means divine ruling. I am learning it in RSCS. It’s really interesting finding out about other religions. Today we learnt about Islam and Jesus. He is their prophet and a messenger of God.’
‘I didn’t know that. I was taught he was the son of God,’ Grannie said.
Joy opened the cupboard door and peered inside. She grabbed a small packet of Jaffa Cakes from the box and ripped it open. ‘Yes, he is that, too. That was my first term’s topic. Isn’t it wonderful that we have so many things in common?’
‘Yes, I think it is. They only taught us one religion at school, and that was Christianity. We learnt about Moses and how he parted the Red Sea, and Noah and his ark. There was a flood and the animals …’
‘Went in two by two, we did that in primary school. Moses is in the Quran. He is famous for his miracles and talks with God.’
Grannie smiled – there was hope.
Thanks so much for the inspiration, Reena. Here is my contribution:
Much love,
