1. What food item has gone up out of all proportion in your opinion over the last year?
It is hard to say, as everything has gone up in the last year.
2. When Covid hit in 2020, did you get caught without vital provisions, or were you able to buy what you needed when you needed it?
I could buy whatever I needed apart from toilet roll and hand sanitiser. Although meat was in short supply, as well as vegetables. However, the people that over brought these items, ended up chucking them away because they went off. The same went with petrol, where people decided to fill their cars, and not think of other people on a budget.
3. What food item was popular when you were a child that no longer seems to be readily available now?
Wimpy restaurants. When I was growing up there were at least two on the high street. But they lost their popularity in the mid nineties due to other restaurants opening in their place.
4. Do you/your shop to a budget, do a big shop once a month and then small top ups or buy what you need as and when necessary?
I shop once a week, and normally at the weekend. It would be better to shop when we need it, but I work full time. We always have some frozen items, for the times when we haven’t got the money. Mainly at the end of the month.
Gratitude: I am thankful for having enough food to eat. Even as a child, I never went hungry. Unfortunately, many parents are having to rely on charity to feed their families – even when they work hard.
there is more poverty now amongst people than there ever was in the past!

It shouldn’t happen, but it does.

Thanks for sharing your world Diana. I remember Wimpy! There was one in the bus station precinct and one in the High Street in Poole.
Like you, I never went hungry as a child and when I was bringing up a family, I did so on £8 a week which was subsidized by food brought back of site when I worked for the vending machine company. It was still good, so we could have pasties or pie and chips for our evening meal with bread and butter for chip butties. I worked part time and he worked on a building site, so long hours. I honestly don’t know how some families manage today.

No, it is difficult. I often shopped on a budget too.
