Blood That Stains

A light shone on the stormy waters, guiding us closer to the shore. Without it, many of my friends would have perished. Our ship sails past the shore, following the beautiful sight. Did Clara know I was coming home? She promised to put a lamp in our window every night.

We travelled to a country where gold held no value. The locals led a simple life; my captain forged an alliance with the chief. Perhaps they should understand that we are not to be trusted.

I joined the Royal Navy to see the world, but all I have been part of is punishing the weak. Perhaps I will feel more content when I am in my sweetheart’s arms. Although since travelling home, I cannot sleep for the blood that stains my uniform.

We slow as we enter the port, and I take the long walk home. As promised, the light shines brighter than the stars. I observe her at the door, with our beautiful boy in her arms.

I blink; the horrors of my actions flash. Picture by awful picture, she is there, protecting her baby. I don’t fire my rifle, but a friend takes aim and shoots the unarmed woman.

I am to blame – I should have stopped him. When truths emerge, the weight of light is stronger than hope.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
