Sailing Home

My white and red sails wilt. Thick fog devours their colour. I pull them down and go into my cabin-nothing more than a bed and supplies. In cruel weather, it is safer to let God guide me on my adventure.

Why does anyone think our world is flat when the beautiful sun is a sphere? Dad taught me how the stars are like a map. You read them well, and home is never far away.

Albert thinks I will fall off the edge, but even that is better than living a lie. My father’s ship is mine to sail. If I got married, all my belongings would go to my husband.

Whatever my morning brings, it will be to a beautiful sea, singing the song of humanity. A world where I, a woman, can be the mistress of the sea.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
