Love to Shop

Written for https://pensitivity101.wordpress.com/2026/08/31/share-your-world-31st-august-2026/

1.  Do you enjoy shopping? (food, clothes, shoes etc)

Food shopping is a way of getting out of the house, or rather getting my husband out of the house. It is something we do together. When shopping with my daughter it is more fun, because it isn’t just the normal stuff we are buying. I do enjoy Christmas shopping because I am buying for someone else and not myself.

2.  What is something you used to buy often but either buy less or no longer buy at all?

I used to buy ready made sauces for spaghetti bolognaise, but now we cook it from scratch. This is mainly because we needed to change our diet due to health reasons. However I prefer knowing what has gone in my food.

3.  Food shopping only: do you prefer to shop in person or on-line?

I prefer to shop in person because you never know what you might find in the middle aisle. I shop at Aldi’s and it is nice to find a treat to buy myself or family.

4.  Do you use charity shops (I believe this is Goodwill for my American readers), car boot sales or village hall / church hall sales (which I remember as jumble sales)

I do like buying things at charity shops, and I love going to car boots with my daughter and granddaughter. It is a way of giving an object another chance at being loved. Many of the items sold cost a fortune new. My daughter always buys something at a charity shop at Christmas, and tells her daughter it is from Santa. I used to go to jumble sales as a child. Second hand means we are not wasting earth’s resources.

I never knew my grandmother, and I am grateful that I am a grannie. I see so much of my daughter in my granddaughter. The same curiosity about everything. Whether we are young or old, that is an important life lesson.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

      1. I use a tin of pineapple in natural juice and use that for the ‘sour’ instead of vinegar. Fresh grated ginger to suit your taste or powder is OK. You can add a touch of garlic if you like it. (I don’t now)
Put a dessertspoon of cornflour in a cup, add the juice from the pineapple and mix. Add three teaspoons of brown sugar, one stock cube (I only use chicken) and soy sauce (dark or light doesn’t matter, and use to suit your taste, mine is usually 2 tablespoons.)
You can add thinly sliced carrot and/or peppers for some colour.
I cook diced chicken first, then add the sauce which will thicken so you may need to add some extra water, and I add the pineapple pieces last.
You might like a sweeter sauce, so another teaspoon of sugar would be OK. What’s nice about this is that you can tweak it to suit you.
        Hope you like it.

  1. That curiosity that passes from grandmother to granddaughter to you that’s what shopping becomes when you really see it, Diana. Not the buying, but the connection. Finding treasure at car boots together, giving second-hand things another chance at being loved. That’s a life lesson right there. Beautiful. 💙

    Much love,Khadija 💕🤗
