Childhood Enjoyed

Comics Collected

each layer of childhood read

my childhood enjoyed

Outgrowing my eyes,

donated to hospital

another chance shared

Birthday and Christmas

presents to help me feel safe

soft toys with a heart

Cherished cuddly

toys no longer in my hands

Mum donated them

I cannot remember my age, but Mum decided I was too old for cuddly toys. When I was at school, she gave them to our local hospital. I was unimpressed, but I could not retrieve them. When I was older, my husband brought me a brown and black dog named Boon (a favourite television show from the eighties)

My collection of comics was my choice. I enjoyed reading Misty, Jacky and Whoopie. When I went to work, I thought the children’s ward could have them. I should have kept the first copy.

They are antiques now.

I remember my childhood fondly; I had a swing in my back garden and made up stories from a dip in the grass (it was my little boat). I would dress up in my mum’s old clothes and make mud pies.

In my bedroom there was an organ. I learnt to play chopsticks, and Blue Danube. Starsky and Hutch posters covered my walls. I would read, write, and sing with a microphone (hairbrush) in front of the mirror.

Imagination was a friend that never let me down.

Perhaps that’s why I love to write.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. I loved the line ‘each layer of childhood read’ . It gives me an image of a child laying on the rug reading their comics – a sense of security, soon to be given away.

  3. I love this poem and the accompanying prose. It made me feel all sorts of things. It also made me realize with gratitude that at least I still have one of my childhood soft toys.

  4. Yikes! I’m so sorry that you didn’t have the decision of when to relinquish your toys. My son#2 had his “Honey Bunny Twisty Boop” stuffed rabbit well into middle school. He slept with it until he decided to put it away. Even then he kept it in his dresser drawer. I think he still has it!
