A Trio of Word Prompts

So many things had gone wrong that morning.

My alarm hadn’t gone off on the mobile. Luckily my dog barked at the right moment and I woke up ten minutes late. Hoping to get some charge, I pushed the plug back in the socket. I couldn’t be late for this meeting – it was too important.

Rushing around the room, I pulled on my trousers, shirt and tights. I was thinking of calling them, to say I would be late, but my mouth was so dry I didn’t think I could speak.

Fear had left me clueless.

It had been a good idea to make the appointment with the solicitor yesterday. A way of escaping a marriage I couldn’t cope with any more. Larry would be at work until five. I was going to pick my son up from nursery and go straight there.

I didn’t wear make-up today. Today the bruises were no longer kept secret. They would be shown – not with pride – but with honesty. There was a reason for my courage.

Miles had seen it happen this time.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
