“Whatever you do, you can’t do that.”

I am assisting with the surgery today, and I am looking forward to learning off the best. ”Can’t do what?’ I ask.”

”Be afraid for the patient,’ he says, as I hand him the scalpel.

”What if I make a mistake?”

”If you care too much, then mistakes are easy to make.”

Now, a surgeon for three years there is no choice but to care. This is my former teacher on the table. The man I learnt everything off. Now I have to act like I don’t care.

One wrong move, and his heart will stop.

For a second I close my eyes, and he is there with me. Fighting alongside me, and I know I won’t make a mistake.
