A Present

It appeared overnight, the gift wrapped in brown paper, tied with a string. It looked out of place with the other presents. Not worse, better. They worked together – her children had worked together to buy the perfect gift.

They smiled as she gently tugged at the string and wrapped it in a neat little ball for next time. Nothing was wasted. The brown hue of the paper was traced along her fingers and slowly, carefully the present was revealed.

A note book, with follow your dreams on the front. She leant down, not afraid to cry. She hugged her children, and kept their heartbeats close. It was their first Christmas without him and they would get through this together.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
