Life had just seemed to pass me by until that day when my anniversary gift was revealed. Maurice, never normally romantic, normally forgot, but they had been married for forty years.
They were like a comfortable, old pair of slippers, settling into old age together. But she didn’t feel old. Fifty was the new thirty, or so her friends said. There were days when her legs resembled eighty, but she didn’t want to be the typical grannie, knitting socks, and going to cake meetings.
Sometimes, when they were sat in front of the television, she wondered what went through his mind. Boredom, that is what she felt. Most days she fell asleep at the end of a movie, or detective series. The amount of times she missed the murder reveal could be counted on both hands and feet.
This gift, a variety of a parachute jump, surprised her on two levels.
He hated heights, and struggled to go on any high rides. The fact he was prepared to jump with her said more than words ever could. It wasn’t a real parachute jump, and she wasn’t quite sure how it would work, but it was different.
She kissed him, and brought her old man into a hug. ‘Thank you so much, and for afterwards we can go and see a show. My treat!
A sweet story.
