“How capricious of you,” my friend said, as I bent down to give a homeless man a cup of hot chocolate, sausage roll, and a pack of doughnuts.

“Thank you,” he said.

I stroked his pooch.

I almost wished I brought a few treats, and retrieved a pack of cooked chicken from my shopping bag.
