The question on Tuesday was five movies better than books.
- Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Even though the book was good, the first film showed us Harry. No longer something in our imaginations, we could see the characters interact with each other. The book and film weren’t quite in sync with each other. There was a duel in the book between Harry and Draco, which wasn’t in the film.
- The Colour Purple – although strictly speaking I haven’t read the book. It was a film found while scrolling on Sky, and found myself watching all of it. Whoopie Goldberg is a great actress, and portrayed her character in a great way. You could see her journey from being vulnerable to a strong, powerful woman. I would recommend anyone to watch this.
- The Grinch (not the cartoon version). Jim Carrey was both comical, and serious. It is a film I can watch again and again, without being bored. The books, designed for children, but the film was popular with all ages. Even when he was being his meanest self, you felt for his character. His heart grew several sizes at once, and so did mine.
- I’m struggling now, as I’ve loved most of the books I have read, so I am going to talk about films I like instead. Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban was a brilliant book and even better film. Mainly because we got introduced to Sirius Black. There was so much action, and there wasn’t any part of that film I didn’t like.
- Marley and Me, and the book inspired me to watch the film. A true story, you need a box of tissues. John Grogan’s novel based on his childhood and adult life. Having a dog is an amazing thing, and I love any film with a dog.
Interesting picks! I wasn’t crazy about the Harry Potter movies, but I admit that was more due to other circumstances vs. the movies themselves.

Let us just say, I went through a whole box of tissues. My son, who never cries at anything, cried all the way through.
