In The Dark

Written for the word prompt from https://fivedotoh.com/2022/08/30/fandangos-story-starter-61/

I turned on the evening news only to see one of the biggest secrets of my life playing out before my eyes. My secret for the world to see, and I am on the other side of the coin.

Normally, I am responsible for the newspaper articles, now everyone knows about my home being raided by the police. Whatever they found, not mine, but those who read the tabloids will only see what they want to see.

Richard assures me it will all blow over, and that he will print my side of the story.

Moving back home is my only option now.

My parents aren’t equipped for the media spotlight, and I need to regroup. Bill Morrison too powerful to go against – It is my word against his, and at the moment it doesn’t add up to much.

Another knock on my door, and I’m about to retreat into my bedroom, when he calls through the door. ‘Sarah, it’s Tony, please let me in.’

‘Please, go away,’ I shout, but he doesn’t listen, just keeps on knocking.

‘I just want to talk,’ he says.

Opening the door, I quickly pull him inside. I’m not sure who I can trust, but Tony is honest in his opinion of me. He didn’t get along with me at first, but the only person who remotely understands what I’m going through.

‘You can’t stay long,’ I say. ‘They’re probably going to start knocking on the door, if they think I’m not alone.’

‘I’m here to help, so is Mike, and Barbara, you just need to trust we believe you aren’t capable of the drugs they found in your flat. We are all here to help, but you have to let us in.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
