‘Are you going to malinger on the sofa all day Dad, I mean you’ve had this cold for two weeks now.’

Two weeks at her fancy school, and Sarah was saying all sorts of words he didn’t understand. Yes it had been two weeks since he went to work, but this stomach bug was taking longer than usual to get better.

‘I’m not well, I have a sickness bug,’ he said.

‘But you said you would take me to my ballet classes, and Mum is working. Please Dad, I don’t mean to moan, but maybe you will feel better if you get up. Besides, if I don’t go this week, they said I had to stop my classes.’

Dragging his legs out of the cover, he sat up. Thankfully the room stopped spinning, and he was able to stand up. Driving was another matter; if he got into the car now he would probably crash.

‘We’ll get a taxi,’ he said. ‘that way I get the fresh air, and you get to dance. Although if I am sick at your class . . .’

‘It’s alright Dad, I can ring my mate, see if her mum can take us. Can I have five pounds? Sometimes we go for something to eat afterwards.’

‘Wallet’s on the kitchen worktop, but no malingering mind you, and make sure you are back by five,’ he said, giggling at being funny.
