I have a https://sillyfrogsusan.com/2022/12/12/the-monday-peeve-12-12-22-getting-a-grip/
Dog owners, who don’t pick up their dog’s mess. When I take my dog out, I will always carry two bags, as he tends to do more than one. It isn’t hard to take a bag, or to walk to the bin with it. Yet some dog owners don’t think they need to.
It is dangerous, because it can cause blindness (or that’s what I was told when I was younger) Also, if you are walking, and tread in it, you can bring it home.
Having a dog, isn’t always just the fun stuff, we have to make sure to look after them. Vet bills, they are extortionate. My dog had an inner ear problem, which meant he needed ear drops, steroids, and a check up. (£120 pounds later)
You have insurance, but you don’t want to use it because something else might happen. Something more expensive, and you need to keep the premiums down. It isn’t worth claiming for anything under that amount.
Why can’t we have a NHS system, but for animals? Pay a certain amount a month, knowing you can get treatment for free. There are so many people unable to pay vet fees, and leave it too long to see the vet. Even if there was somewhere you could go, knowing your animals would get treated for free would be better than what we have.
It takes a lot of work to properly care for our pets, but they deserve all of our love.

They deserve our loyalty because they are always loyal to us.

The inconsiderate dog owners irritate me as well. And vet bills? Argh!

Inconsiderate dog owners piss me off too, and we have a lot here, especially in the summer. In some towns, you can be fined if you do not have the means to clear up after your pet. It’s a good idea IMO.
Like your idea for an NHS for pets, though there is the PDSA for those on low incomes and certain benefits, which of course doesn’t help everyone. We have insurance with a £200 excess which we can cover and keeps costs down. Also ours is an annual ‘top up; policy so if we use some, it is automatically topped up to the original amount the following year. Our premiums are reasonable, but will probably go up every year anyway. We pay a plan to our vet which covers monthly flea and worm treatments and annual jabs, plus two check ups and nail clips a year. Any meds we have up to 20% discount, so it is worth having.

I do the same for monthly flea treatment and vaccinations. It does help. I also have insurance, because if there were a bill for thousands he would still get the treatment.
