Safe House

This week from https://fivedotoh.com/2023/04/24/fandangos-flash-fiction-challenge-216/

Packing away, once again, Milly was sure she didn’t want to leave.

They were always expecting the call, something to say her father’s identity had been revealed. She was proud of him. Taking the step to get in contact with the police. Going across county lines, using teenagers, younger than her. The damage caused by using the basketball club to do it.

Afraid, it was best not to show those feelings.

Her dad talked to her, like she was an adult – always. They sat down as a family, ring fenced what he was about to do, and they all agreed. The police would protect them; or try to at least. Sometimes though, you could be recognised. This time, it was a Facebook post of another parent.

A knock on the door, three quick, then two slow, and her new life would begin. Another name to remember, more friends to lose. Not that she got close to anyone – it would be worth it. Her only confidant was on the floor, and her name was Alice. She went on many adventures, so could she.

Perhaps, one day, they would stop running but not today.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
