In Training

Out of shape, that’s what the gym said, but then that was never in doubt. She hadn’t worked out since she was twenty years old. If it wasn’t for the fun run at her granddaughter’s school, she wouldn’t even be here. Last year, she tried running, gave up half way through and the medic had to be called to get her breathing back to normal.

She looked at the walking machine, putting it on slow. That was alright, she could just take it at her own pace. If she could think of something to walk for, then going to the shops for a chocolate bar would be it. Her trainer gave her the advice. Start small, half an hour, then build up to more tolerable levels.

Below her, there was a swimming fitness club going on. Ladies, bigger and older than she was in the pool. Now that was her pace. Maybe she could book a session when her workout was finished. The machines, each their own little torture station, she decided to give the leg machine, or whatever they called it a miss. I mean, her muscles weren’t meant to stretch in that manner.

She put her mobile on the front, this would go better with some proper music. Bon Jovi, Living on a Prayer seemed liked the right song to play. If she could manage ten minutes of exercise without dying that would be great. ‘Oh, I’m half way there, Oh, living on a prayer!’ There were a few funny looks, but what was life without them.

Finished, her mobile buzzed.

‘Hi, what do you want?’

‘We were going to Greggs, to buy a doughnut, and a sausage roll.’

A second and her answer was clear, just a doughnut for me, I trying to watch my weight. Meet me outside the gym in twenty minutes.’
