Honesty

‘It’s a puzzle, that the cookie is missing, and there are crumbs by your pillow. Yet you say you haven’t eaten anything.’

Molly brushed away the evidence, with the best face she could. It wasn’t her fault she was hungry. ‘What crumbs Mummy?’ She pulled herself up and took the offered hot chocolate. ‘I didn’t eat the cookies, honest.’

‘Love, I don’t mind you eating the cookies, but you need to ask first. Being honest is important because we have to own up when we’ve done something we shouldn’t have.’

‘Why?’

‘What if you tell me a lie, about meeting your friends. I will think you are safe, when perhaps you are not.’

‘Okay, I did eat the cookie. It is just, they looked so nice. Will you put me in prison?’

‘No, you’ve been honest and that’s a good thing.’

Molly brought her Mummy into a hug. ‘I’m sorry . . . Can you read me a story?’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
