Deception

Her deception was clear, but she validated her actions with the idea she had been lied to first. They were meant to be friends – yet the post on Tic Toc changed her viewpoint. A funny video her friend said, just between them. Now it was all around her workplace.

They weren’t children any more, and she thought she left all that silliness behind.

Why were people so mean? It wasn’t like she didn’t want to get along with any of them. The training day had been planned, to do an assault course. Team bonding. Sheila was responsible for what happened when. It was easy to add in another session, where Stephanie would have to do it first. She hated getting muddy and she would be the one filming the whole thing.

She stood at the start, ready to go, when another colleague walked up to her.

‘I’m really sorry with everything going around the office. What Stephanie did was cruel. I’ve reported it to my boss and he said he would sort it out.’

‘Aren’t you worried about being a snitch?’

‘Not in the slightest. We are not in nursery school and they are adults. Is that Stephanie there? She’ll hate all of this. Are you going to watch?’

Sheila put her mobile back in her pocket; revenge would be sweet, but life wasn’t like that. ‘No, I reckon I won’t. Shall we go to the coconut shy, I’ve always wanted to win one.’

She didn’t care for revenge much, and even as Stephanie complained, it was up to her to be kind, even to her enemies.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
