There are many secrets in the world, even between friends and The Survivors, by Jan Harper is a great example of this. A small seaside town, where people think they know each other. A suspicious death many years previous, and Gabby’s killer has never been found. When a young woman called Bronte is killed, the investigation leads them to the caves, where Kieran was rescued as a teenager. As a result his older brother was killed trying to save him. Or so he thought.
Family is important to Kieran, and the guilt he carries around with him is part of his daily life. If he weren’t in the caves that day, then his brother would still be alive. It is as though being a dad himself, brings him closer to the guilt. When the investigation leads towards his brother being responsible for Gabby, he doesn’t want to believe it. When he tells his mum, she doesn’t either. Although, there are more secrets ready to be revealed in time.
I loved reading this book, and it is another brilliant example of how family can pull together. The Survivors, and sometimes that is what life felt like to Kieran. He survived the storm, but it took more to survive his guilt at something he wasn’t responsible for.
Five out of five stars for this well written book.
Thanks for this lovely review. I like the sound of it.
