Birthday Treat

Sarah hid behind the balloons, all the smiling faces giving an air of happiness. Her little girl liked Baby shark, and she couldn’t afford the fancy birthday cakes, or themed parties. The balloons she got off Facebook Marketplace. The paint was free from the same site. Painting the wall, was easy.

She spent the afternoon making cakes, sandwiches, and party bags. The front room was streaming with yellow, blue, and pink. Her partner brought Maisy back from her cinema trip.

The smile from her daughter made all the effort worthwhile . In a few hours it would be over, but she hoped it would be remembered by everyone there. Yes, the icing was a little wobbly, and the cakes a little small, but everyone of them enjoyed the games; pass the parcel, musical statues, and hide and seek.

At the end of the afternoon, a happy three year old, Mummy and Daddy, fell asleep on the sofa. Smiling faces, surrounded the happy family. Tomorrow they could tidy, and eat the left over sandwiches and cake.

Their front room, was a little bit like a hurricane had hit it, but to Sarah, only her child’s happiness counted.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
