Being a writer, my creative side has always been words; connecting them into sentences, giving life to something that would otherwise not exist. When I am reading a book, I am immersed in a different world. The first book I read was the Janet and John, phonic stories. I quickly graduated too paperbacks when I was five years old. My first proper book was Katie, quickly followed by What Katie did next. I was a fan of Enid Blyton. The Twins of St Clare’s, Famous Five, and Secret Seven were worlds I escaped into regularly.
My tastes have changed over the years. I have always been interested in anything set in the second or first world war. Especially women’s fiction. I love to read about a strong female character, fighting against adversity, coming out the other end stronger for it.
When I started writing my thriller, ‘In The Dark’, I realised I needed to read more of that genre. There is a difference in style. It is more succinct with little flowery language and the pace is quicker.
I find it difficult to find any time to read; writing my novel ‘Orvieto’ takes up my morning; work from eight-thirty to four-thirty; writing my blog in the evening. But I need to read more to improve my writing. I have recently received some good news about getting a bursary. A literary firm has assigned me a reader to give me some valuable feedback on my novel, ‘‘Orvieto’’.
I’m so excited.
Writing is a part of me and as important as breathing. Fellow writers, you will understand. From an early age, we’ve always had the urge to create something out of nothing. A string of words together and we create another world, full of imagination and inspiration.
writing has always been a part of me too. I’d be lost without it!
