My signature song will always be ‘‘I will survive, by Gloria Gaynor’’. Recorded in 1978, I was thirteen. I remember singing (out of tune) with a hairbrush in my hand, singing the lyrics. The words reflected my mood. Not so much about the school I attended because by then I found my bestie, Theresa. My experiences in junior school were traumatic. Shy, quiet, and lacking confidence to fight back; I was always going to be a target.
It was through her friendship I was finally proud of who I was.
Lyrics
At first I was afraid. I was petrified.
Kept thinkin I could never live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights thinkin how you did me wrong
And I grew strong, and I learned how to get along.
I will sing to any song, and most of the tunes I love listening to are from the sixties and seventies. Some are nostalgic, and some will make me cry. That is good, because with tears I remember family and friends, who are no longer with us. It is with their love I feel strong.
Especially my dad.
Thanks Diana for sharing your song/ music with us. Finding your tune, and a best friend that understands you, both are a great gift.
