The Power of Nature

A crack in the smile, and her strength faltered. She was like a statue, who lingered to much in the sun.

Time was a healer; her doctors said that. Yet, a year passed and she struggled to comprehend how to cease her sadness.

‘Sorry it has been a while since I visited.’ She gently arranged roses in a silver vase. ‘I have been so busy with work and school runs. They say hi, by the way. Cheryl won first prize at the Science fair. You would be so proud. Millie is learning to play the violin. It doesn’t resemble music, but she is loving it.’

A butterfly settled on the headstone, its wings still. She reached out. Red strands were like silk under her fingers. Robert believed in nature and the gift of life transferred to another.

She had doubts.

‘I miss you, I wish it were possible to hold you in my arms. Don’t worry. I pretend that I am happy in front of them. But how do I exist without you? Waking up and not having your face next to mine is torture.’

‘You okay?’

Her mum helped her stand, and let her tears fall on to strong shoulders.

‘When your dad passed away, I was unsure if I had the capability to do it. I knew I had to because you were only seventeen, and had gone through a great deal. We did most of it together.’

‘Shouldn’t I feel better by now?’

‘No, because our affection for them never disappears. He is watching over each and every one of us. Especially you sweetheart. Whatever emotions you are experiencing joyful memories over write the ones causing you pain.’

‘He loved taking the kids to the theme park. Do you mind if you go with me? I cannot cope with it alone.’

‘They will love that, and I can pack some sandwiches, cake, and some treats. Although, I’m not going on any of those rides.’

‘Love you Mum, don’t ever change.’

The butterfly hovered before soaring into the blue sky, its angel wings ready to fly.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
