Relatives

1.  Did your parental home have a ‘parlour’ or front room reserved only for when you had visitors? We only had one front room (parlour) and when we had visitors, we would put the food on a table there, and move the furniture so we could play cards, or celebrate a birthday.
2. Did you ever go to stay with relatives during the school holidays? I stayed with my sister a few times. My nephew is five years younger than me, so we would spend time together.
3. Did relatives (cousins, grandparents) come to stay with your family in the holidays? My nephew and niece would stay at mine, and Mum would make her special (beef boil in a bag with gravy) mash and vegetables. We always had apple pie and custard for pudding.
4. What do you remember from the 1960s. Not much. I was very young. The time I remember most is the late seventies. I went out with my best friend to the fair. I always got squashed on the twister. She moved to America when I was fifteen, but we are still besties today. When I was older, I went to parties (without my parent’s knowledge) and spent time with friends.

I am grateful my childhood wasn’t under the scrutiny of social media. I made mistakes, but none could be shared with the world. I feel sorry for teenagers now, because no posts can be deleted.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
