Tonight

I didn’t think it would be so swift at a possible retirement age. I’m nearly sixty, and in some ways it is nice I am healthy enough to enjoy not working. It is getting more difficult, because of being on my feet all day.

That doesn’t stop me from wanting to do more.

Tonight, I am going to my GCSE Math course, and tomorrow I am volunteering at a local entertainment centre. Sometimes I go round my daughter’s and help with the tidying. I understand, when you have a young child, it isn’t easy to do everything on your own. My mother-in-law was amazing, and without her, I would never have coped with managing my job and taking care of them, too. My mum is the same. She did her fair share of babysitting.

They got to know their nannies, and I got a bit of breathing space.

It definitely won’t be a quiet life. I still have to work part-time because my private pension doesn’t pay the bills, but at least I will find a job where the schedule would suit me more, and to spend more quality moments with my husband, children, and granddaughter will be amazing.

Next year is not a million miles away, and I am looking forward to slowing down – at least from sixty to thirty, and taking life a little more slow.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
