Written for https://weeklyprompts.com/2024/10/19/weekly-prompts-weekend-challenge-ahead/ and https://skepticskaddish.com/category/poetry/poetry-prompt/ this is my attempt at a sonnet.
I couldn’t stop staring into your eyes,
counting all of your fingers and perfect toes
Hours of pain forgotten in seconds
Months of protecting you, my child, one promise
to always be there and never fail you.
A mother’s hope. My pride shone, and I grinned
when you took your first brilliant step
to a first day at school, and the lost years
blossomed and you don’t really need me to
hold your hand. Safe, and happy, is all I
want for you. I am here, keeping my word.
and retracing your steps, this time from a
distance. Ahead is your journey, my hope
will still be there, and my protection too.
This is so beautiful Diana. You’ve encapsulated the feelings of all moms.
