With the knife in her bag, her thoughts wandered in and out of consciousness. Nobody was here to save her, and she didn’t know what to do. Barbara, in her house, obviously, and she was after something.
Sarah wrapped her fingers around the handle and hid in the shadows of the entrance.
She twisted the key in the lock, listening for any movement. Years of being a reporter ingrained in her memory. Living the quiet life haunting. Yet, it caused her happiness her enemy couldn’t steal.
The door slowly pushed open, she peaked inside.
At home in the dark, her cane strapped over one arm, she could beat her in a fair fight.
The lights flashed brightly as she faced a cheering crowd of friends.
‘Surprise!’ Tony shouted. ‘You can’t turn forty without a proper party.’
She glanced around the room, half of it in shadow. The rest, in a glow so beautiful, she basked in the room’s warmth. The tip dug into her handbag. Years passed, yet the memory of talking to the woman who took her husband’s life created a chasm of fear.
Her guide dog, Merlin, padded over with a wag of its tail.
‘You okay?’ Tony asked.
‘Yea,’ Sarah said, shutting the door.

I have never written for SOCS. I looked at the prompt and found it was KN word. Very interesting story.
