Autism Card

It was going to be a long flight, and he hoped the woman sitting next to him

wouldn’t start chatting. His shoulders shrank as he placed in his ear defenders. His autism card was on his lap. He hoped this stranger would give him space, rather than asking what it meant. With a brief smile, she returned to her novel.

With an inward thankyou, he lifted his colouring book out of his carry-on bag and his music lured him to a place where he felt comfortable. His first rock concert with his dad, and he could sing all the melodies to every Bon Jovi piece.

Eight hours later, as the wheels landed on the tarmac, he turned to his fellow passenger. She completed the last word, as the final song played. As she heaved from her seat, some change fell from her purse.

Without speaking, he passed the coins into her hand.

‘Thank you,’ she said.

‘That’s okay, have a safe journey.’

His long flight, and he found the best neighbour ever.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. Aww, I’m glad that she was considerate and gave him his space. To get neighbours like that on long haul flights are a true blessing indeed. Meanwhile my cabbie irritated me with annoying questions related to my personal life on the ride to the Airport today morning! I was relieved and glad when it was done.
    Loved the story, Diana.
