Crowded

Nobody owned up to it.

I mean, the crowded lift; already a mixture of body odour, and late invoice nerves; was never a pleasant place to spend your lunch break. The colleague, who let rip in a confined space, obviously hiding.

‘Shouldn’t have eaten the chillies!’ Tom shouted.

Lolita, from admin, giggled first.

Fred’s cheeks turned a funny colour of pink as he shuffled into the corner.

‘Whoever dealt it smelt it,’ I said, before thinking.

By now, everyone had a fit of the funnies. Every time I laughed, I inhaled to a potent combination of pain and joy. It still didn’t stop me, and a few seconds later, another aroma joined the crowd. Oops; it always happens when I least expect it.

As the doors opened, we tumbled out, our eyes red with crying.

‘Would give it a minute, or wear a gas mask.’

We rumbled through the corridor, and for moment all our worries went up in a toxic smoke.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
