Blanket

‘A blanket statement! What gives you the right to say I have lost the company money!’

‘The stocks you purchased in the duvet double company, are worthless. They were meant to cover us for a better financial future, instead I am having to let people go.’

Graham slumped in his chair, wrapping his hands into the lethargic leather. His manager had a point. Most of his ideas lost their warmth. Was sleeping possible for him? At night, nothing kept out the frost of his mind. Thoughts travelled, seeking an answer to his fear.

‘You are normally a brilliant worker, is there something bothering you?’

‘Just that … I’m not sure this is for me. I would rather work as a florist. Please don’t laugh.’

‘I’m not, it’s just being a broker is in your family history.’

‘That’s the problem. Money, and making a profit doesn’t make me happy. My granddad, used to teach me how to plant roses in a bed of manure. When they were blooming, we would pick them, mum always got a gift for her birthday. You can fire me if you like, perhaps it’s time for me to follow my dream.’

Leaving the room was like a freshly washed blanket, knitted by his grannie.

A hopeful future, and a good night’s sleep made him grin.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
