As fallen words catch, he couldn’t think of what to say to his daughter. I had been twenty years since he left. It wasn’t the easiest choice, but turning into his father scared him. Drink held him in a grip beyond his comprehension.
‘Dad …’
‘Stella, you came.’
‘I cannot stay. Mum said it was a good idea, but I’m not so sure.’
‘Please, I have to explain.’
She followed him to the park bench, where they used to feed the pigeons with tiny pieces of stale bread. His little girl looked up at him then. An perfect way to heal the past.
‘Why now?’
‘I have been sober for a year, and part of my journey is to provide amends.’
‘Amends!’
‘I never hurt anyone, but I was capable of it. We argued, I was drinking as normal. Walking away seemed my only option.’
‘From what, you were my hero, I thought you didn’t love me.’
So often the case. Humans, on the whole are very poor communicators. Nicely done.

Sometimes walking away is for the best, but for those left, especially if they are young, they don’t see it like that.

I feel so blessed I got sober before I had kids. That would be a heartbreaking situation for everyone.

This is something many kids struggle with- when a parent seems distant. Beautiful story
