Sarah was not dainty.
She tripped over thin air, and falling up the stairs was an art form all her own. She stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her wedding dress, covered in tiny rose petals, she held her dad’s St Christopher.
What would he think of his little girl, all grown?
‘You ready, love,’ her mum said. ‘He would have been proud. You are beautiful, and he is with us. The car is here, and your brother is waiting downstairs.’
One movement at a time she tried to be as careful as she could. Each step taking her away from her bedroom; from her home. So many stories within these walls. An injured robin with a broken wing repaired with her dad’s tenderness. Her cat jumping down to meet her from school. Sat on the steps, refusing to budge, when her sister got married. Rushing into her brother’s room at two in the morning to let him know it was Chrismas. The back garden, with her imaginary boat, taking her on sunny adventures.
Her last hour as a single woman.
Yet this felt so right.
What a nice reflective picture you painted with these words.
